St. John's the Evangelist Catholic Church
Green Bay, Wisconsin

"In the Fall of 1831, a young Dominican missionary, Reverend Samuel Mazzuchelli, was sent to La Baye to establish a Catholic parish for the Indians and French-Canadian fur traders living here. The first church was built at Shantytown, the site of the present Allouez Catholic Cemetery, on land donated by Joseph Ducharme.



"The Redemptorist Fathers and other pioneer missionaries continued the work of Father Mazzuchelli. A fire in 1847 and the change in the center of population brought the congregation to the site in the borough of Green Bay. This church was purchased from a Methodist congregation. This church was also destroyed by fire in March of 1872. A new, twin-spired brick building was built to replace the former Methodist church structure and was completed in 1873. Faulty wiring led to a fire which destroyed this church on March 13, 1911. On May 11th of that same year, Bishop Fox and the St. John's Parish trustees approved the building of the new church on the corner of Milwaukee and Madison Streets. Joseph Foeller was contracted to be the General Contractor for the new church at a cost of $54,099.00. The present day church was completed in 1915." (See Link 1.)

"The roof line on all sides includes miniature arches below the eaves. The semi-circular arches are repeated in the windows, with most enhanced by white stonework that's reminiscent of an eyebrow. Walls are massive. Decorative elements are abundant. High up in the two towers are Roman columns.  The church is considered architecturally significant as a textbook example of the Romanesque Revival style.



"Many people wonder why the towers are of different heights. That's a sign of the Romanesque Revival style that was popular starting in the late 19th century, the 1988 survey notes. The taller of the towers holds two bells. The larger bell is named St. John, and and the smaller bell is named St. Mary." (See Reference.)


"Structure (in the photo above) as seen in 2006 (at 413 St. John's Street). Note the absence of stained glass in round windows as all windows are being restored in celebration of 100th anniversary.

Wisconsin in one ofthe major corn growing States in the United States. In 2004 corn production was 38% of the total Wisconsin crop.  In 2007 4 million acres of corn were produced.  It sold for $3.50 a bushel.

A View of the World

The house at 739 Westmoreland Crescent was designed by architect W. Birmingham in 1939. The owner of the $2,800 home was D. F. McCrimmon. In 1943 D. F. McCrimmon added a $200 garage to the property. Douglas and Phyllis M. McCrimmon were the owners in 1945 as well. At this time Douglas McCrimmon was the manager at Goodwin and Johnson. And in 1950 L. Harry and Kathleen M. Langford were the owners. L. Harry Langford was employed as a salesman at Parsons Brown Ltd.

By 1955 the owners were Dr. Robert T. M and Doris Puddicombe. It seems the Puddicombe's remained the owners until recent years. They reported to the 1955, 1960, 1980, 1991 and 1995/1996 City Directories that they were living in the house. In 1955 Dr. Robert Puddicombe was a physician at Pearson T. B. Hospital. In 1960 he was a physician at Vancouver General Hospital. In 1991 he reported to the City Directory that he was retired.

In 1971 other residents were reported as living in the house. They were Hugh nd Averil McCreadie. Hugh McCreadie was a sales representative for Allis-Chalmers.

The house sits on the south side of  the Westmoreland Crescent escarpment. From the glassed in back porch is "a view of the world", our world here in North Vancouver at least. (See photo below.) You can see downtown Vancouver with its distinctive Sear's Tower, Stanley Park, and even across Georgia Strait to Vancouver Island.

Puddicombe, Robert Thomas Mardi, North Vancouver, British Columbia; University of London, London, England, 1942, diagnostic radiology. Died Dec. 17, 2007, aged 89. His office was at 135 East 13th Street, North Vancouver, B.C.

The property is listed For Sale at $1,690,000. There are possibly 4 lots.  The existing home is 2,049 sq. ft. with a lower level.

Lynn Valley Wellington

Wellington goes here, there, and everywhere. And it is a Crescent, a Place, and a Drive. Wellington Crescent is in the Capilano Highlands area. Wellington Place is in North Lonsdale area. And Wellington Drive is in Lynn Valley area. But all are in the District of North Vancouver.

The one storey house in the photo above is at 1152 Wellington Drive, in the Lynn Valley area. It was built in 1953 for $8,500 by E. C. Anderson (spelled with an "o" in the Building Permit Book). In 1955 and 1960 Edwin C. and Olive Andersen (spelled with an "e" in the City Directory) still owned the house. In 1955 Edwin Andersen was a clerk at CGE. In 1960 he was employed a a wholesales man at CGE.

In 1971 Joseph and Pearl Alterio were the owners of the Wellington Drive house. They reported to the City Directory that they were retired. There was
"no return" to City Directory inquiries in 1980. In 1991 and 1995 L. J. Chasmar lived in the house. In 1995 L. J. Chasmar reported he had lived there for six years.

Under the Green Tarp

Panorama Drive runs at the base of Mount Seymour high above the curve of the waters of Deep Cove at the very eastern end of the District of North Vancouver. Where there was once a scattering of summer cottages along the waterfront, there is now a community with a main street, its own Seymour Art Gallery and Deep Cover Shaw Theater, and a dense population of large year round homes. Panorama Drive has even had a name change. It started out being called Burns Avenue or Burns Avenue and Crescent. But on October 1, 1960 the name was changed to the present Panorama Drive. This name change makes tracing the history of a home on Panorama Drive a challenge. Although Panorama Dr. is listed in the Building Permit Book, it or any of its previous names doesn't seem to appear int he 1931, 1955, 0r 1960 City Directories. Panorama Dr. is in the 1971 City Directory.

The houses under the green tarps, and there are two, have the addresses of 2568 and 2579 Panorama Dr. The Building Permit Book lists 2568 as being built in 1930 for $900 by J. R. Robinson. However, the recent real estate ad (See Link.) lists the date of origin as 1920. The 1980 resident reported in the City Directory was Greg R. Parslow. The 1981 and 1995, 9+ year resident was Patricia L. Galbraith. So Patricia Galbraith lived there since the mid 1980's.

The real estate ad in the Link gives further information on the property:

Behind the Berm

The post and beam house behind the crescent shaped berm on 615 East St. James Road was built in 1954 for $9000 by A. J. Douglas. The 1955 City Directory reports the owners were Arthur J. and Georgina Douglas. Arthur Douglas was a collector on the First Narrows Bridge. In 1960 the owners were David C. and Julia R. Norman. David Norman was employed as a salesman at CKNW.

Then by 1971 Frank and Charlotte Grundig owned the house. The Grundig's not only bought the house, but added to it and stayed there for the rest of their lives. (See Links 1, 2, and 3.) They are listed as the owners in the 1980, 1991, 1995/1996 City Directories and Frank is even in the 2008/2010 North and West Phone Directory. In 1971 Frank Grundig reported that he was president of Century 21 Photography. In 1980, 1991, and 1995 he listed his employment as Zenith Graphics. According to his obituary, photography and mountain climbing were his passions. In the summers he would volunteer at the B.C. Mills House at the Pacific Parkland in the Lynn Valley Headwaters. (See Link 1.)

Charlotte Grundig played the harp and taught piano from her home at 615 East St. James Road. (See Link 3.) It was because of this that in 1974 the Grundig's had an architect design the peak roofed studio addition on the west side of the house. Here the piano students could enter without going through the Grundig living room. The piano was situated in the north part of the great room, under the chandelier. A space for an audience extended to the French doors on the south side of the room that opened into the backyard garden. (See the photo below, of the south side of the house and the music room.) The crescent shaped berm garden area in front of the house was a result of the excavation for this music room addition.

Frank and Charlotte Grundig contributed much to their community.  They died within a month of each other in the spring of the year 2008.
