Happy Canadian Thanksgiving
The Story of Two Houses and a Tent
Vancouver and West Vancouver, B.C.

Elizabeth Ruth Clarke was born in 1874 in London England.  In 1902 Elizabeth married Frederick James Ades. They moved to Vancouver, Canada in 1905.   They had three children, Nina, Gordon, and Nancy and owned their own home on Victoria Drive. (Built in 1901.) Elizabeth worked as a maid to vaudeville actors performing in Vancouver.  She was a dresser for Marion Davies, who married William Randolph Hearst.  She was also a cleaner at the Beacon Theater in Vancouver.    In 1922 Frederick left the family and never returned. 

Elizabeth could not pay the taxes on the Victoria Drive home, and a  neighbor, Mr. Robertson, purchased the house for the price of the tax bill.  Elizabeth and the three children moved to a tent with a wooden floor at 19th and Railway in West Vancouver.  The tent in the photo below is an example of the kind of tent it might have been.  Nancy and Gordon  continued to attend Lord Selkirk School in Vancouver by taking the West Vancouver ferry to Vancouver each day. Elizabeth and her daughter Nina also took the ferry to go to work in Vancouver.

In 1923  Elizabeth and the three children moved back to Vancouver, to an apartment on Commercial Drive.  In 1926 Elizabeth bought the house at 1833 Lakewood Drive, Vancouver.  The house was on a 1/2 lot south of the lane between 17th and 18th Street.  Her son Gordon and his wife bought the house from Elizabeth in 1948.  Elizabeth moved to Pico Rivera, California to live with her daughter Nancy and her husband.  She later lived in Huntington Park, California with her daughter Nina and her husband and their son Alan Wilson.  Elizabeth died in 1963 and is buried at Rose Hills Cemetery in Whittier, California.

The Sails of Canada Place


Like five ballerinas in blue tutus surrounded by a twinkling corp of a thousand, the skyline of Vancouver is lit up for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. The light show of the accompanying Cultural Olympiad is being shown on the Sails of Canada Place. The office buildings of downtown Vancouver furnish their own light show behind it. The normally white sails shine with other colors than blue as in the photo above. When you watch the YouTube Link below you will see: the green, red, yellow, blue and white colors of the Olympic Rings; scenes of the athletes and their venues in the lime green, blue and white colors of the Winter Games banners; and stars, stripes and flowers on green and blue backgrounds.

Construction on 999 Canada Place started in 1983. The sails were up by October 1984, and the Prince Charles officially opened the building as a part of Expo '86 in May of that year. Canada Place juts out into the salt water of Burrard Inlet like a magnificent sailing ship. The building houses the Cruise Ship Terminal, the original Convention and Exhibition Center, and the first Vancouver IMAX Theater. The Pan Pacific Hotel is on the land adjacent to this "ship". In 2001 a third berth was added to the Cruise Ship Terminal. The site of Canada Place is the old CPR Pier B-C. This was the western terminus of the sea to sea transcontinental Canadian Pacific Railway.

Today is the opening day of the Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Games. From March 12th to the 21st 600 athletes from more than 40 countries will be competing in Vancouver and Whistler. Their events included: Alpine Skiing, Biathlon, Cross-County Skiing, Ice Sledge Hockey, and Wheelchair Curling. This, the Xth Paralympic Winter Games will be welcomed by its own Olympic Flame.

Note: The Rings are usually lit in the five colors of the Olympics: blue, green, red, yellow, and white.  However, on days that Canada wins a gold medal the rings are all lit in red.  This must have been such a day. (Information from a TV commentator.)

Pacific Coliseum Banner

"Pacific Coliseum (100 North Renfrew Street) is an indoor arena at Hastings Park in Vancouver, British Columbia. Completed in 1968 at the site of the Pacific National Exhibition, the arena currently holds 16,281 for ice hockey, though capacity at its opening was 15,713.

"The Coliseum is currently the home of the Vancouver Giants of the Western Hockey League. The arena also hosts a variety of events and concerts. It has also been chosen as the venue for figure skating and short track speed skating in the 2010 Winter Olympics.

"Other hockey tenants of the Pacific Coliseum have been the Vancouver Canucks of the NHL from 1970-1995 and the WHL from 1968 to 1970, the Vancouver Blazers of the WHA from 1973-1975 and the Vancouver Voodoo of the RHI from 1994-1995."

Designed by W. K. Noppe in 1966–67, with its simple geometric shape and distinctive ring of white panels, the building can be classified as formalist architecture. " Wikipedia. Construction of the original building cost $6 million. Renovations for the 2010 Olympics cost $20.4 million. The money for the renovations was provided by the Canadian and British Columbia governments.

The green and blue colors for the over 6,000 banners  in Vancouver were chosen by VANOC. They were created to represent the look of Vancouver. And VANOC was right since there has been not a single snow fall in the city of Vancouver this year. The grass is bright green and the forsythia, crocuses, and even an occasional daffodil are dotting the gardens. Half of the cost of the banners was in their creation, the other half in mounting them on light posts and buildings. The large banner covering the north side of the Coliseum depicts a figure skater and speed skaters,both of which will be competing at this Olympic venue.
