Naas Family-40 Years

The house at 527 North Dollarton Highway at the entrance to Deep Cove with a view of Burrard Inlet was built in 1954.  (See Link.) In 1955 W. G. Babcock built a $300 garage and in 1962 an $800 house addition.  Those listings are in the Building Permit Book at the North Vancouver Archives.  However, in the 1950 and 1960 City Directories the street of North Dollarton Highway was not even listed.
Front yard view of Burrard Inlet

In 1971  the 527 North Dollarton Highway  owner was again recorded as E. Nass.  Einar and Sylvia Naas were listed as the owners in 1980.  At this time Einar Naas was employed as a salesman at Davidson and Company.  In 1991 and 1995/1996  Einar Naas was listed as retired and still the owner.  Robin Naas, a clerk at N R was  listed as a resident.  The 2008/2010 North and West Vancouver Phone Directory continues to list Einar Naas as living at 527 North Dollarton Highway.  That is 40 years ownership of the house for the Naas family at the entrance to Deep Cove with the view of Burrard Inlet

A 2010 real estate ad describes the property as being on a 15,015 square foot lot and the house having 3 bedrooms and 2 full bathrooms.  It was listed for sale at $925,000. (See Link.)

Down in the Gully

It looks like the house "down in the gully" at 2063 Parkside Lane was the home of Berna Mounce and possibly only Berna Mounce. There is no listing in the Building Permit book at the North Vancouver Archives or the 1950 or 1960 City Directories.  However, in 1971 Berna Mounce is listed as the owner, no other information is given.  In fact no other information seems to given until 1991 when her employment was as a custodian in the North Vancouver School District.  Burna Mounce continued to report that she owned the house in the 1995/1996 City Directory and is listed at the 2063 Parkside Lane address in the year 1999/2000 North and West Vancouver Phone Directory.  In the 2006/2007 North and West Vancouver Phone Directory her address is listed as 341 24th Street, North Vancouver.

"2063 Parkside Lane was formerly addressed as 208 Parkside Lane." (Elaine Oakes)  But even at that address there is no further information as to when it was built or who built it and lived in it until about 1971.  A further note from Elaine Oakes indicated that the house was 700 square feet  had a concrete foundation resting on bedrock. In 1996 the DNV building official declared "that the perimeter crawlspace framing walls were rotten with the entire structure being unstable.  Remedial work was done up to a minimum standard as required by the building code."

Real Estate ads on the internet give more information about the house "down in the gully".  REMAX reported that the house was offered for sale for $735,000.  Another site states that "plans are approved for a 2400 sq. ft. house" to be built.

Parkside Lane is a short street in the Deep Cove area of the District of North Vancouver.  Although it borders the east side of Deep Cove Park and ends at the water, to get there requires snaking around the park through the streets of Deep Cove.

Thank you: To Elaine Oakes, Records Management Clerk, District of North Vancouver for information regarding building of the 2063 Parkside Lane home.

A Week of Black and White
Since 1946 in Deep Cove

This 1946 home at 4142 Mount Seymour Parkway is noted in the Real Estate ad as being in Deep Cove. It just makes it into this most eastern area of the District of North Vancouver for it sat above the intersection where the Dollarton Highway turns into Deep Cove Road. The road runs in the west from the Upper Levels Highway to the base of Mount Seymour and then on to this junction in the east where Dollarton Highway changes to Deep Cove Road.

The name of Mount Seymour Parkway itself does not seem to appear in the City Directories until around 1971. There is no listing of Mount Seymour Parkway or Mount Seymour Highway in the 1955 City Directory. In 1960 and1965 Mount Seymour Highway is listed, but not Mount Seymour Parkway. However, in those years there are no addresses on Mount Seymour Highway. Mount Seymour was named in honour of Frederick Seymour, second governor of the Colony of British Columbia. (See Link 2.)

In 1971 there is full documentation of the 4142 Mount Seymour Parkway address in the City Directory and Mount Seymour Highway no longer is listed. Leslie F. and Glady's N. Newson are listed as owners of the 4142 Mount Seymour Parkway house. Leslie Newson is also listed as president of Leslie Brown Realty.

The only other owners listed in the City Directories are Terrance and Anne Sheldon. They seem to have lived at 4142 Mount Seymour Parkway at least from 1980 to the year 2000 as indicated by both the City Directories and the North and West Vancouver Phone Directories. In in 1991 and 1995 Terrance Sheldon was working as an electrician.

The Real Estate ad in Link 1 describes the house as being on a 14,303 sq. ft. double lot. The 4 bedroom 3,052 sq. ft. house had two storeys with a basement, and a double garage. There was even a "peek-a-boo" view of the water. It sold for $800,000. (See Link 1.)

A Week of Black and White

The Black and White photos of all the homes this week were taken in July of 2007 as part of the Demolition and Construction North Vancouver Archives Project by Suzanne Wilson. On notification of City and District applications for Demolition Permits the photos were taken and documented. Negatives and contact prints were filed at the North Vancouver Archives as part of their permanent photo collection. The project ran from 2001 to 2010.

Under the Green Tarp

Panorama Drive runs at the base of Mount Seymour high above the curve of the waters of Deep Cove at the very eastern end of the District of North Vancouver. Where there was once a scattering of summer cottages along the waterfront, there is now a community with a main street, its own Seymour Art Gallery and Deep Cover Shaw Theater, and a dense population of large year round homes. Panorama Drive has even had a name change. It started out being called Burns Avenue or Burns Avenue and Crescent. But on October 1, 1960 the name was changed to the present Panorama Drive. This name change makes tracing the history of a home on Panorama Drive a challenge. Although Panorama Dr. is listed in the Building Permit Book, it or any of its previous names doesn't seem to appear int he 1931, 1955, 0r 1960 City Directories. Panorama Dr. is in the 1971 City Directory.

The houses under the green tarps, and there are two, have the addresses of 2568 and 2579 Panorama Dr. The Building Permit Book lists 2568 as being built in 1930 for $900 by J. R. Robinson. However, the recent real estate ad (See Link.) lists the date of origin as 1920. The 1980 resident reported in the City Directory was Greg R. Parslow. The 1981 and 1995, 9+ year resident was Patricia L. Galbraith. So Patricia Galbraith lived there since the mid 1980's.

The real estate ad in the Link gives further information on the property:
"Price: $1,579,000. Live here in an Ocean Front Paradise! This property has, 2 DIFFERENT ADDRESSES and 2 SEPARATE HOMES, live in them and renovate or "Rebuild" an amazing opportunity, seldom available! Breathtaking views of mountains and Islands, from your own, Sandy Beach. Dock application in progress. The main cottage is 1500sf home, w/2 bdrm and a F/P. The rear cottage is a "Heritage style" original cottage, the rear of the property provides enough off road, parking for 4 cars and underneath is a large storage area. This location is only steps to the forested Quarry Rock trail, shops, live theatre, restaurants, buses, schools, Panorama Park and all else Deep Cove is famous for. Features: Waterfront." House With a Pool

This Deep Cove Tudor detailed home at 706 Roslyn Blvd. was built in 1958 for $13,800 by D. Smith. Darrel H. and Mariette D. Smith reported owning the house in 1971 and 1980 as well. In 1971 Darrell Smith was president of B.C. Tile and in 1980 he and Marriette are listed as retired.

The 1991 owners of the "house with a pool" were Eugene A. and Ethel A. Cherneski. Eugene was the vice president and general manager of the Vancouver Centre Development Ltd. In 1995 Eugene and Ethel Cherneski reported that they had lived in the house for more than 9 years. That means that they were the owners since the mid 1980's. Eugene Cherneski was now the president and general manager of SDM Realty Advisors Ltd. Other residents listed in the 1995/1996 City Directory as living at 706 Roslyn Blvd. were "Elliot and Valerie-Ann" (Sarah Henderson 2011 e mail) Cherneski. Eugene Cherneski was also listed at the 706 Roslyn Blvd. address in the year 2006/2007 North and West Vancouver Phone Directory.

The large two storey home at 706 Roslyn Blvd. features a pool in the backyard and a view of Burrard Inlet and the mountains beyond. (See photo above.) The neighbors report it has been vacant for over a year.
