Swedish Canadian Rest Home

The original building at 1690 Main Street in North Vancouver District was a Public Building/Dance Hall built for $1500 by the Swedish Community in 1928.  In 1944 A. Gjerdaleau applied for a Building Permit to construct a $1,500 house on the property. In 1947 the Swedish Rest Home applied for Building Permit to build a  second home there. This one was valued at $3,500.  And in 1947 there was an application was for a Public Building/Rest Home worth $40,000.

"The three Highway District buildings (the later owners of the buildings-See Link.) were originally the Canadian Rest Home, located on the north side of Main St. on Cutter Island.  Here the Seymour River divided into two branches which flowed around the island, came together again, and flowed into Burrard Inlet.

"Construction of the main rest home and the two small cottages was completed in 1948.  In the late 1950's the land and the buildings were expropriated to make way for the new Second Narrows Bridge.  The west channel of the river was filled in in 1956.  From the early 1960'a until the summer of 2000  the buildings served as offices for the provincial  highways department." Over the years the B. C. Government Department of Highways offices at 1690 Main Street included numerous departments:Regional Office, Highway Patrol, Regional Bridge Maintenance, Bridge Patrol, Public Works, Regional Surfacing, Regional Soils, Regional Right-Of-Way, Regional Maintenance,  and Regional Paving.

The three buildings were a distinctive part of the North Vancouver landscape in that they sat in the center of the Exit 23A cloverleaf on the turn off to Main Street in North Vancouver.  Since their demolition only the occasional deer or seasonal randomly decorated Christmas tree is seen there.

At the Edge of the Forest

The original house at 1210 Dempsey Road sat on the edge of the forest at the crest of Dempsey Road.  The little white house was at the northern border of the District of North Vancouver to the west of Mountain Highway.  It was built in 1948 for $3,750 by W. D. McRae. IN 1952 D. R. Thompson made an $800 alteration.  And in 1958 D. R. Thompson  applied for a Building Permit for a $2000 house at that location.  In 1960 Doug R. and Hazel A. L. Thompson were still the owners of the house.  Doug Thompson worked as a transit operator at B.C. Electric.

By 1971 the owner was Mrs. Jessie I. Dunn.  Jessie Dunn was employed by General Paint as a computer typer supervisor.  In 1980 the owners were John R. and Janet L. Mee.  John was employed as a manager at P. Lawson Travel.

By the mid 1980's the Paul and Janine Crocock had bought the 1210 Dempsey Road home.   Janine Crocock was also listed as living at the 1210 Dempsey Road address in the 1999/2000 North and West Vancouver Phone Directory.  Both in 1991 and 1995/1996 Paul Crocock stated that he worked as  an adjuster at ICBC.  During that time Janine stated that she worked as a travel agent at No 1.

The real estate ad in the Link below listed  the house for sale for $698,000.  The house sat on a 9,230 sq. ft. lot with a partial view of the city.  The 2144 sq. ft. home had three bedrooms and one bedroom. The lot is located in the east end of the Braemar subdivision, backed by the greenbelt.  The Link shows interior photos of this Dempsey Road home.

Many Levels on Carisbrooke

The house with the spectacular view of Vancouver sat on the crest of Carisbrooke Crescent in the North Lonsdale area of North Vancouver District.  The  $9000 home at 270 Carisbrooke Crescent was built by J. Masterton in 1946.  Mina and James E. Masterton continued to own the house  until sometime in the 1960's.  In 1950 James Masterton worked as a salesman for Northern Electric.  And in 1960 he was working as a salesman for W. T Husband.

Then by 1960 another J. had bought the house.   In fact, John and Emily Kneip are listed in the Link web site as still running their Kneip Contraction Ltd., painting and decorating business from the 270 Carisbrooke Crecent address. That is more than 50 years of living at the same address.

During that time many additions were constructed on the lot.  In the front yard there were both a wood and a stone retaining wall.  A grape arbor and bench were built on the west end of the lower level, as was a raised garden bed.  This level was enclosed with a wrought iron railing.  On the west side of the front of the house was built a carport, although the old driveway entrance to the lot remained on the east side.  The side yard was covered with decking with steps going down from the front and then up to the back patio and deck area.  Immediately behind the house was a flag stone design patio with a stone out door BBQ fireplace at the east end.  Behind that and up another level was the "U" shaped building with the sign "Sleepy Hallow".  The back part of the "U" had a metal garage type door.  Running along the east side of the lot and up a level was the fenced in deck with seating running along the side.  From here was the fantastic  view of Vancouver.  Behind "Sleepy Hallow" seemed to be a chain link dog run area.  All these specialized parking, deck, and patio areas made for lots of outdoor living for the Kneip family.

"That's Jack London's Place"

The house at 1340 Sunnyside Drive sat on a lot in the maze of forest roads above the Upper Levels Highway in the Capilano area of the District of North Vancouver. The hum of the cars could be heard in the front yard. According to one of the neighbors the maze was the results of the 1958 development of the Upper Levels Highway and for that reason he had developed his own map laying out just how the streets were cut up in that area.  The same neighbor said of the house at 1340, "that's Jack London's Place".

But the house at 1340 didn't start out as "Jack London's Place".  It was first constructed as a $1500 commercial building in 1926 by S. Fraser.  The second structure was a $1000 house in 1933 by J. Stally.  E. Thomas added a $150 house alteration in 1939.  Then in 1950 the present house was built for $4500 by D. Broderick.  All this information was found in the Building Permit Book at the North Vancouver Archives.  However City Directories 1926 to 1945 did not list the 1340 address or any of the owners from the Building Permit Book as being on Sunnyside Dr.  Martin P. and Jean Stally were listed on the 1200 West 26th Street block in 1935 and 1945.  That street is nearby and could possibly been a street changed by the building of the Upper Levels Highway in 1958.

Much more is known about the 1340 Sunnyside Drive house after 1950 thanks to  Michael Kinnie.   "At 1340 Sunnyside Drive there was a small house built by a Mr. Don Broderick. The Broderick family was well known in North and West Vancouver. Don had just got married to his wife Esther, this would have been about 1950 and bought the lot from the people at 1330 Sunnyside Dr. (Mr. and Mrs. Paul Morgan) He built his honeymoon home and then moved Esther and their two cats in. Soon Esther had a baby girl whom they named Norma. I was a very frequent visitor at their house. In the summer of 1951 I had failed grade three and was suppose to go to summer school; I did not like school at all and was devastated. Esther Broderick had been a school teacher so my parents made arrangements for me to get some extra help from Mrs. Broderick each weekday morning throughout the summer from 10:00 to noon. This went very well, I was on a one to one basis with somebody I was very fond of and would do my best for.

"Don and Esther had another baby about 1952, a boy named Daniel, the house only had two bedrooms and they sold the little house and bought a large house in the 1100 block West 21st. Street that had belonged to their friends the Franklin's. Don Broderick was the model husband, he worked in a mill full time and then would come home and help Esther with the housework and put the children to bed.

"The house was then bought by a Mr. and Mrs. Leckie, (Lorne and Doreen.) They had a little girl and later a little boy with flaming red hair. I do not remember these children's names. Mr. Lome Leckie was named Lome after a well known steam tugboat that was called "The Lome". They lived there for many years and then moved out to Lynn Valley. Doreen Leckie and my mother were great friends and saw each other everyday. The Leckie's were nice, kindly people. Shortly after the move to Lynn Valley Lorne Leckie died very suddenly. He was a lot older then his wife. He was a veteran of world war two and had served with the eighth army in Africa.

"The house was then purchased by a childless couple named London, his first name was Jack, hers was Zelda. They had cats which all had 'Z' names. My brother Allan became very fond of them and they likewise of him. My brother Allan was born in 1954, when I was just going on 12. I did not know the London's very well because by the time they moved into the neighbourhood I had left home. I did however do business with Jack London some because he use to bring his saws into my shop for sharpening. I do not know if they are still there at this writing in 2006, but they were there in 1995 when I called them to tell them that my brother had died the year before." (See Link.)

Jack London was listed in the 2008/2010 North and West Vancouver Phone Directory.  It seems his interests were evident throughout the property and as can be seen in the included photos.

Naas Family-40 Years

The house at 527 North Dollarton Highway at the entrance to Deep Cove with a view of Burrard Inlet was built in 1954.  (See Link.) In 1955 W. G. Babcock built a $300 garage and in 1962 an $800 house addition.  Those listings are in the Building Permit Book at the North Vancouver Archives.  However, in the 1950 and 1960 City Directories the street of North Dollarton Highway was not even listed.

In 1971  the 527 North Dollarton Highway  owner was again recorded as E. Nass.  Einar and Sylvia Naas were listed as the owners in 1980.  At this time Einar Naas was employed as a salesman at Davidson and Company.  In 1991 and 1995/1996  Einar Naas was listed as retired and still the owner.  Robin Naas, a clerk at N R was  listed as a resident.  The 2008/2010 North and West Vancouver Phone Directory continues to list Einar Naas as living at 527 North Dollarton Highway.  That is 40 years ownership of the house for the Naas family at the entrance to Deep Cove with the view of Burrard Inlet

A 2010 real estate ad describes the property as being on a 15,015 square foot lot and the house having 3 bedrooms and 2 full bathrooms.  It was listed for sale at $925,000. (See Link.)

Watt on the Corner

Of the three homes at the east end of the 3600 block of Mount Seymour Parkway was the house at 3633 Mount Seymour Parkway.  It was the house closest to the corner with Mount Seymour Road.  It also had a variation in the design in that there are three windows above the front door.

Again there is no listing of Mount Seymour Parkway or the 3633 address in the 1955 or 1965 City Directories.  And there is no listing of the 3633 address in the Building Permit Book at the North Vancouver Archives. 

But in 1971 J. A. Watt is listed as the owner.  In 1980 James and Margaret I.  Watt are listed as the owners.  James Watt was working as a iron worker at G and H Steel at that time.  In 1991 and 1995/1996 James and Margaret I. are again listed as the owners and listed as being retired as well.  The 2008/2010 North and West Vancouver Phone Directory lists James Watt at the 3633 Mount Seymour Parkway address as well.  That makes 40 years that the Watt family lived at 3633 Mount Seymour Parkway and 20 years that they were neighbors with the Mynott family at 3601 Mount Seymour Parkway.

The House in the Middle

The house to the east of 3601 Mount Seymour Parkway was at 3615 Mount Seymour Parkway.  It sat in the middle of the cluster of three houses at the corner with Mount Seymour Road.  Its design was the reverse of 3601 with the large living room window to the west of the front door.  It also had windows that could be seen on the lower level below the two small bedroom windows.  And its garage was not under the house, but attached to it.

Again this street and home were not listed in the 1960 or 1965 City Directories.  In 1971 the owners were Peter and Mrs. Catherine T. Waltz. Catherine Waltz worked as an invoicer at Western Marine Supply.  Peter worked as a bartender at the North Shore Winter Club.  In 1980 there was "No Return" to inquiries by the City Directory staff.

In 1991 and 1995/1996 the owner was reported to be Kristina Vanbervoort, an employee at the Hospital Employees Union.  In 1995/1996  she noted that she had lived at the 3615 address for 7 years.  So she must have moved in earlier than the 1991 date, perhaps in 1988.  Another resident at the 3615 address was listed in the 1995/1996 City Directory, that was Gordon Moss, an employee at White Foot Enterprises.

Triumvirate on Mount Seymour Parkway

There are three single family homes sitting on the south side of the east end of the 3600 block of Mount Seymour Parkway.  They are the last of the single family homes on this long block.  The other housing is multifamily homes.  And across the street at this corner that is Mount Seymour Rd. and the entrance to Mount Seymour Provincial Park, is Parkgate Shopping Center.  There is no listing in the Building Permit Book at the North Vancouver Archives for any of the three homes.  And the 1960 and 1965 City Directories do not even list Mount Seymour Parkway.

The first of the three similar single family homes, the most western,  is at 3601 Mount Seymour Parkway.  It was listed in the 1971 City Directory and so was its owner, Eakujapaa.  In 1980 the owners was named  Elmer Akuganpas. 

In 1991 and 1995/1996 the owners were Clive and Wendy Mynott.  Clive Mynot was employed as a fitter welder at Pacific Truck and Trailer Ltd. during that time.  Clive continued to live at 3601 Mount Seymour Parkway in the year 2000 since it was reported in the 1999/2000 North and West Vancouver Phone Directory as his address.  And the Mynott family continued to live there in 2006/2007 since the Phone Directory listed Leslie Mynott at that address.  It seems that Clive Mynott did not move far in 2008/2010 as he was then listed in the Phone Directory as being at 1931 Deep Cove Road.  Deep Cove crosses Mount Seymour Parkway about a mile east of the 3601 Mount Seymour Parkway address.


Note: The room on the lower floor that featured large sliding glass doors probably started out as a  garage.  A driveway leads to it.  This similar house design was seen in the Blog Post at 2895 Edgemont Blvd., "The Reverend's House", November 16, 2010.

The Reverend's House

The house at 2895 Edgemont Boulevard is in the Capilano Highlands area of North Vancouver District.  It was built in 1950 for $10,500 by the Reverend J. G. Greig.  By 1955 the Venerable H. J. Greig (Note spelling and initials.) and his wife Caroline J. Greig owned the house.  The Venerable H. J. Greig was the Archdeacon and pastor of the newly established St. Catherine's Anglican Church.  The Reverend H. J. Greig served the St. Catherine's Anglican Church from 1951 to 1956. The house just a block from the Edgemont Village town center was typical for that area.  It included an underground garage, indicated by the driveway on the left leading to it.  As can be seen in the house photo that the garage was filled in to extend the living space.  This was also a typical conversion.

The 1960 owners of the house at 2895 Edgemont Blvd. were Chase H. and Flora Gowe.  Chase Gowe worked as a weighman at the Board of Grain.  In 1971 the owner was Mrs. M. L. Browne.

By 1980 Edward and Beryle Knight were the owners.  Edward Knight was a sales representative for Evergreen Press.  They continued to own the house at least until the publication of the 1995/1996 City Directory.  In 1991 and 1995/1996 Edward Knight reported that he was the sales representative for Ronald's.

The 2010 real estate ad (See Link.) describes the house of 2,400 square feet on a 8,050 square foot lot as having 4 bedrooms and 2 full bathrooms.  It was advertised for sale for $849,000, and that was a reduced price.

An Independent Woman

The house at 1101 Prospect Avenue is across the street from Cleveland Park at the base of Grouse Mountain and has been there since 1936.  That is when it was built for $400 by P. P. Hartney.  At that time it was sitting on 5 lots. (PO) And that might explain why two addresses seem to be reported for it when listed in the City Directories.  Another factor is that there is no cross street between the 1000 block and the 1100 block on Prospect Avenue. 

In the 1940 City Directory no address is listed for the 1000 block of Prospect Avenue.  However P. P. Hartley is listed as an owner on the "ss" in that block.

The Dinham's bought the house in 1945. (PO)    In 1950 again there is no listing for 1101 Prospect Avenue, but there is for 1071 Prospect Avenue.  The owner at that time was still listed as  K. Dinham. It is possible that because of the size of the property, 5 lots, that 1071 was the address for this home at that time.  Again in 1955 the 1101 address is not listed.  And again the 1071 address is with owners Ken and Dorothy M. Dinham.  In 1960 again the pattern is repeated with Mrs. Dorothy Dinham listed as the owner.  

In 1971 the City Directory finally lists 1101 Prospect Avenue as the address of the Dinham house.  It seems that Dorothy Dinham, an independent woman, continued to own the house  until her death on January 12, 2010.  By this time the house was on only 2 lots.  

Dorothy Dinham was born on May 4, 1915 in Kitsilano, Vancouver.  Her family, parents, mother's name was Bedova (PO) and brothers Carl and Hal and sister Beatrice,  were the Ansell's of which Ansell Place on the West Vancouver coast north of Horseshoe Bay was named.  When Dorothy moved to Prospect Avenue and went to downtown Vancouver she would ride her bike.  During this time  she worked as the paymaster at McNair Logging. (PO.) In 1960 Dorothy Dinham was a receptionist at the 4th Avenue Veterinary Hospital in Vancouver. In 1971 Dorothy Dinham worked at the Signman of the North Shore.   She also worked at the Capilano Heights Chinese Restaurant until she was 80. (PO) Her obituary in The Vancouver Sun mentions how "she enjoyed the outdoors and gardening as she had lots of knowledge she would share."

The tall cedar trees in the front yard (to be saved by the new owners) were topped years ago which has given them their unusual shape. The multiple branches at the top of the cedars look like the struts of an umbrella. (See photo below.)

One Block From Lynn Canyon Park

The corner house at 3945 Lynn Valley Road was built in 1949 for $4,500 by owner R. D. Lee.  In 1950 Robert Lee also applied for a Building Permit for a $300 garage. In 1950 Phyllis E. Lee, a student,  also lived at 3945 Lynn Valley Road.

In 1960 the residents of the house  were Herbert E. and Louise E. Bowley.  Herbert Bowley was a printer at Pacific Press.  The 1971 owners were David R. and Marion G. Matthews.  David Matthews was a letter carrier for the Post Office.  In 1980 the residents were Barry and Jill Urquhart.

In 1991 the owners were Stephen J. and Lydia B. Thomas.  Stephen Thomas worked as a sprinkler fitter at National Installation.  Lydia Thomas was employed as a stenographer clerk in ticket reservations for Yugoslavian Airlines.  In the 1995/1996 City Directory the owner was reported as Audrey J. Shippard, an Xray technician at Holy Family Hospital.  She bought the house in 1991.

This one storey home on the corner of Lynn Valley Road and Kilmer Road was set in a yard of ferns and tall trees.  A stone path rambled through the front side yard that led to Kilmer Road. Tall trees stood in the front yard like soldiers protecting the cosy home.



The three bedroom, one bathroom home at 3945 Lynn Valley was listed for sale on the Web at $630,000. "Hiking and biking at your door step."
